A Special Wedding

Hello. I am so excited to witness the marriage of my son Rob and his fiance Kaley.
It's taking place on a boat in Vancouver, BC this week. I haven't been on an airplane in 4 years so the fear of flying has taken hold of me...I used to fly quite often...but now my knuckles are white and I haven't even made it to the airport yet. Going from 100F here in the desert to 60F with rain in Vancouver...Yikes! Where's my down parka?
I'm excited to go back to Vancouver, my home for many years and can't wait to see Rob and Kaley!
Just a short blog this time, but a really special one. Over and out.

Special Unexpected Gifts

Wow, it's been a long time since I first started blogging, and I it's been a long time since my last blog. I think it should be called a bog, because I get bogged down trying to write something, but here goes. So now I'm posting a new "bog". Summer is here. Our friends from Vancouver, who we see every year when the weather up there is not so hot, were down for a vacation recently. The weather here in the desert was nice, a bit windy at times, but still nice. Some golfing (I took up golfing, FORE! :o ), some tennis, some barbeques, etc. and some painting in between.

This shot ended up on the green across the lake! Actually, not really :o....kerplunk!

After everyone flew back north, I received a very special unexpected gift from my friends, Craig and Heidi.

They have fostered an orphaned elephant at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in my name.  You can read more about this David Sheldrick, an amazing individual at http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/html/about_david_sheldrick.html

My adopted elephant is named Sities. She was found in Southern Keyna by the red thumbtack in the map attached here http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/map/map.asp?id=229.

This is how her arrival at Mgeno Ranch was described.   "An unusual visitor walked into the Mgeno Ranch Headquarters, within the Tsavo Conservation Area during the morning of 22nd March 2010. This unusual visitor was a bellowing baby elephant, desperate for company and who sent all the Staff scuttling for safety, fearful that the baby’s mother might turn up to claim it. Eventually they ventured out, their sudden appearance frightening the little calf, who ran off a short distance, but then returned, desperate for company. Too young to know fear, being only about 1 ½ months old, the Staff tied it to a tree, and then called Dr. David Ndeereh of the Trust’s Tsavo Mobile Veterinary Unit, who in turn alerted our Voi Elephant Keepers that an elephant rescue was needed."

Big Summer Challenge Starts Today !

[More Prizes added! Revised minutes ago to give prizes for each of the 5 legs as well as 3 surprise prizes for the top 3 overall scores after all 5 legs are tallied up]

Contests are fun for everyone. Lots of humor, lots of interaction, a bit of competitive spirit, actually tons of competitive spirit and fun prizes for the winners. We just finished a warm up contest solving a jigsaw of one of my paintings and now we're ready for the Big Summer Challenge!

The Egg Leg

The Big Summer Challenge starts today with Leg 1 of 5. Each leg of the contest you can be awarded points so play all the legs if you can. The first of 5 legs in this challenge will be to be creative with 1 to 12 eggs. We'll call this the Egg Leg. Boil them, decorate them, dress them, or fry them or poach them, arrange them in a creative or funny manner. Make them look like celebrities, or whoever or whatever, put them in funny positions. No real guidelines beyond that, you can use any materials you want, markers, paints, dyes, alfalfa sprouts, whatever. Just have fun and be original. The eggs will be judged based on creativity and/or humor plus originality. Between 1 and 20 points will be awarded on this leg. This is going to be eggselent!

Start submitting pictures of your entries today to tadd@jennifergarant.com. Egg Leg ends midnight this Sunday (PST). Be creative! Have Fun! After all 5 legs, points will be tallied and the top 3 point totals will win a genuine Jennifer Garant prize that will remain a mystery until the end of the contest.

In the meanwhile, each leg we will also be awarding a prize to the winner and runner up. Here are the prizes for the top two point scorers in the Egg Leg contest. In the case of a tie, we will draw the winner from a hat. Good luck!

I Love Designing Fabrics!

Over the past few months, I have had the wonderful opportunity to design fabrics with Timeless Treasures Fabrics, Inc. It is something I always wanted to do and now its happening, with a launch this week of 20 of my designs at the Spring Quilt Market. My first designs are "Bad Hair Day", "Nothing to Wear", "Combs & Foams", and "BathTubbies", with coordinates to go with all of them. I got my samples a week ago and it was thrilling to see what started out as small paintings of girls with "bad hair", girls with "nothing to wear", "combs & foams", and "bathtubbies" made into fabrics. My next set will have cats n dogs, and my signature chefs.
Now I just need to buy a sewing machine.

Recipe Week - Surprise Fruit Salad

Here is a recipe extraordinaire!! (I must give credit to my pal Laura for this one). It was served for the first time at my annual CHRISTMAS IS FOR CHICKS, CHOCOLATE & CHAMPAGNE PARTY this past December.

SURPRISE FRUIT SALAD

Ingredients:
3 different types of apple (sweet, sour, tart)
cored and cut into small bite size pieces
1 tub of cool whip, softened
3 large snickers bars, cut into small bite sized pieces

Preparation:
Toss all ingredients into a crystal bowl and use your hands to really mix everything up so the apple and chocolate bits are totally covered in cool whip. Lick your fingers to sample the results.

Serve this SURPRISE FRUIT SALAD chilled with PEACH CHAMPAGNE.

Great as an appetizer or dessert... or both!!!

Recipe Week - A Holiday Trio

This trio is a favorite every year at our house...
The holidays just wouldn't be the same without them!

Halloween
Mummy Toes

Ingredients:
2 cans of refridgerated cresent roll dough (8 per can)
1 16oz package of cocktail smokies
1 pkg almond slices (in the baking isle at Walmart)
ketchup

Preparation & Baking Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Open can of cresent roll and unroll the dough. Place one triangular piece of cresent roll on a baking sheet or cooking stone.

Put a cocktail weenie in the wide end of the dough triangle; roll the dough around the sausage (you should have one layer of dough covering it completely - leaving the 'toe' end exposed). Taper the other end to look realistic at the base of the toe. Use a knife to score 'knuckles' on the dough in the center.

Place the toes in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. After baking, add a dab of ketchup at the exposed end of the toe and press an almond slice onto the ketcup for the nail.

Thanksgiving
Mr. President's Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients:
3 cups sweet potatoes
(4 sweet potatoes/peeled, cubed, boiled, and mashed)
1/4 - 1/2 cup of sugar
1 tablespoon of vanilla
1/4 cup butter (softened)

Directions:
Mix together and pour into greased pan, set aside.

Topping:
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup flour
3/4 cup chopped pecans
1/3 cup butter (softened)

Mix together and sprinkle over the top of the entire pan.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Christmas
Puttin' on the Christmas Ritz!

Ingredients:
Ritz crackers
Peanut Butter
Almond Bark
Chocolate Bark

Directions:
Sandwich the peanut butter between two Ritz crackers.

Melt the chocolate bark for 90 seconds (or longer to melt throughout). Dip each sandwich cracker into the melted chocolate half way and lay on to wax paper to cool.

When the chocolate has hardened, melt the vanilla bark and dip the opposite side, laying the cookies back on the wax paper to cool.

Recipe Week - Spaghetti Squash

Spaghetti Squash
For a serving of 3 to 4 people

Ingredients:
1 spaghetti squash
1 stick butter or margarine
1 tbsp minced roasted garlic
1 tsp. regular minced garlic
1/2 pint heavy cream
8 oz. shredded parmeasan cheese

Directions:
Cut squash in half from stem to bottom. Deseed. Place squash cut side down on pan and bake at 350 for 35 minutes or until outer edge is soft to the touch. Let cool. Use fork to scrape squash from shell.

Creating the Sauce:
Saute regular garlic in 1/4 stick margarine. Add cream and cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste. In another pan, saute roasted garlic, and remaining butter. Add spaghetti squash to this mixture of roasted garlic. Saute in pan and occasionally mix squash to cook more evenly. Then add cream and cheese mixture to roasted garlic and squash. Add more salt & pepper if needed. Serve.

Note: You can add fresh diced tomatoes and parsley for garnish and color. Toss this in at the end prior to seving.

"The Perfect Dinner Party"

Attention Contest 2 participants...
The final leg of the contest has begun!!

Rules:
You are the host and Chef of "The Perfect Dinner Party". You pick four well known people (can be anybody, living or not - could be writers, actors, politicians, sports people, astronauts, statesmen, whoever that would make up the perfect dinner party).

You are preparing the 4 course dinner and will submit the menu and one recipe as part of the contest. The menu should have something to do with each of your dinner guests. Submit your dinner guests names and their conversation as a script, (i.e., Henry Kissinger replied "blah, blah, blah" to Suzanne Sommer's poignant question) . Each person should say at least 4 things.

We all know that SOMETHING crashed in the desert outside of Roswell, New Mexico that hot afternoon in July 1947. It is quite possible that the extraterrestrial life forms got so fed up with the publicity and alien mockery that their little visit caused that they decided to pick up ship and camp elsewhere. I am banking they choose ‘The City of Light’ to call home. Coincidence that this painting took place in the very same city? And, now we have a murder investigation on our hands. I don’t think so. I have heard that aliens, unlike humans, don’t have to depend on air for survival. And, what better place to lurk and spy on unsuspecting prey than in the Venetian canals themselves. What’s that?! I see one of them now!! Camouflaged on the side of the orange building near the skyline!! Wow, who knew they were capable of changing color in an effort to conceal themselves from their victims. They obviously haven’t mastered their technique, however. I can still see the outline of his green head and limbs. Oh, the horror… Oh, the humanity!! Run for your lives folks… RUN, RUN, RUN!!!!

Challenge Name - "The Royal Tenenbaums" This is one of our favorite movies. If you have not seen it, you should, but that is totally optional! It is a family full of wonderful dysfunctional people.

Contest Participants: We want you to find a character in that movie and do a make-over to look like that character. If you can include more than just yourself to do this, that would be great, but they would have to be a diferent character than you. After you are dressed as one of the characters, you must get a photo in a public place posing as them (i.e., in a restaurant, at a park, etc.) If you have more than two of your family and/or friends do this with you, you will receive an extra point by each judge.

Deadline to submit your picture is:
Tuesday Aug 25th at midnight (EST)

If you have any questions, please post them on Facebook.

Ryan Tramonte
Ryan is the General Manager of French Art Network and Rue Royale Art Partners of New Orleans. With galleries in Carmel by the Sea, California, Santa Fe, New Mexico, New Orleans and Key West, Florida; the company’s family of galleries represents 54 artists from across the globe. Aug/Sep Contest

Okay, the next contest at Jennifer Garant Studios is ready to start.... as soon as we get at least 30 collectors and friends to sign up. The day we reach 30, we will continue to include additional people until midnight that day to a maximum of 50 contestants. To sign up, please send an email to info@jennifergarant.com and tell us you are signing up for Contest 2.

This contest will last a month and hopefully not take up too much of your time. We hope it will be fun, because it will be well worth your time. The winner will become the owner of a 22"x30" original painting of one of my chefs on 300lb French watercolor paper. It will include a letter of authenticity and Jennifer will personalize it before we ship it to you. We think that in this economy, no one deserves a Jennifer Garant original more than one of her collectors.

The details of the contest will be shared when we have at least 30 contestants. Only one contestant per household. You must be 18 years or older. The contest will be split into 2 parts and we will have 2 challenges per week as well as a couple "quickfire" challenges.

Things that you will need: access to a computer with email, access to a camera, sense of humor, some gaming skills, some card skills, curiosity, and possibly some cooking skills. So please sign up to compete, and we will get Contest 2 started.

It's going to be fun!

Think you're fast at putting puzzles together?

The Challenge:
Solve the jigsaw puzzle of
Jennifer's painting "Beach Girls".

Whomever solves this puzzle in
the shortest amount of time will
win some fabulous prizes from
Jennifer's collection!!

Official Contest Rules:
1. Click here and locate the "Beach Girls" painting.
2. Put the puzzle pieces together as fast you possibly can!

3. Once the puzzle is complete, your time will be displayed.
Note: As soon as you click on the painting, your time will begin.

4. Perform a print screen of the time stamp, and save the image.
5. Email the image along with your name and contact information to
